                                                      DUNGANNON C.C. 1stXI  2009

                                                    *************************

DUNGANNON DEFY THE ODDS TO WIN DIV. 1 SEC. 4 AFTER THE COUNTRYFEST DISASTER WHEN THE OUTFIELD WAS DESTROYED.

                                        *************************************************************************************************

DUNGANNON WERE IN VERY PESIMISTIC MOOD AFTER THE 2008 COUNTRYFEST EPISODE.  IN SEPTEMDER PART OF THE OUTFIELD WAS PLOUGHED WHEN IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALSO HARROWED , LEVELLED AND SOWN OUT IN GRASS AND THIS PUT THE 2009 SEASON IN DOUBT. MORE WORK WAS DONE IN APRIL 2009 WHEN THE OUTFIELD WAS PARTIALLY LEVELLED BY SPREADING SAND BUT NOT HARROWED AND THIS LEFT IT RUTTED AND COVERED WITH TRACTOR TREADS WHICH PROVED TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE GRASS GERMINATED.

NO WORK WAS DONE FROM THEN ON AND BY THE MIDDLE ON JUNE THE GRASS WAS 12" LONG ON THE UNPLOUGHED AREAS LEAVING THE CLUB WITH THE PROSPECT OF NOT HAVING A GROUND.

BILLY AND CHRIS ADRAIN HAD BEGUN TO RESTORE THE SQUARE TO A GOOD CONDITION DURING EARLY JUNE AS SOON AS IT WAS POSSIBLE TO REACH THE SQUARE WHICH HAD BEEN AN ISLAND IN A SEA OF MUD. BILLY THEN BEGAN TO CUT CLOSE TO THE SQUARE TO ALLOW THE GROUND TO DRY UP. THIS PROVED TO BE DIFFICULT AS THE GRASS HAD TO BE REMOVED AS IT WAS SO LONG AND IT TOOK A CONCERTED EFFORT BY THE CLUB MEMBERS TO DO THIS.

THERE WAS NO SIGN OF COUNCIL ACTIVITY TO RESTORE THE GROUND TO A PLAYABLE  CONDIITION AND IT TOOK AN EMAIL FROM BILLY ADRAIN TO INITIATE SOME ACTION ON THEIR PART TO EVEN  BEGIN CUT TING THE 12" HIGH GRASS AND THAT WAS ONLY ONCE A WEEK . THIS WAS NEVER GOING TO MAKE THE GROUND PLAYABLE. THINGS WENT FROM BAD TO WORSE WHEN BILLY, WHO HAD BEEN CUTTING BACK THE OUTFIELD GRADUALLY STARTING CLOSE TO THE SQUARE , WAS DENIGHED THE USE OF THE 18" ROTARY MOWER .  THIS FORCED BILLY AND IAN GILPIN TO TRY TO RESTORE THE 60" SIT ON CYLINDER MOWER BELONGING TO THE CLUB.

iAN DID A GREAT JOB REPLACING WORN ADJUSTING BOLTS AND GETTING ONE CYLINDER TO CUT PROPERLY. THIS ENABLED BILLY TO CUT THE OUTFIELD DOWN USING ONE CYLINDER AND THIS TOOK 7 HOURS ONE SATURDAY. THUS THE GROUND WAS MADE PLAYABLE . IN BETWEEN TIMES BILLY AND CHRIS HAD WORKED ON THE RIDGES FORKING LEVELLING WITH SOIL AND ROLLING TO MAKE THE OUTFIELD SAFE FOR FIELDERS TO PLAY ON.

IT WAS GRATIFYING TO HEAR THE FAVOURABLE COMENTS ABOUT THE PITCHES AND THE OUTFIELD FROM THE UMPIRES and the opposition AND MADE THINGS WORTHWHILE.

IN THE MEANTIME ALL MATCHES WERE PLAYED AWAY UNTIL THE 4th JULY AND THE 1 st XI WERE UNDEFEATED UNTIL LOSING TO THEIR NEAREST RIVALS ,MILLPARK, TO WIN 6 OUT OF 7 WITH ONE HOME GAME BEING PLAYED IN JULY. THIS LEFT 5 HOME GAMES TO BE PLAYED IN THE PARK AND DUNGANNON MADE THE HARD WORK DONE BY BILLY , CHRIS AND IAN WORTH WHILE AS THEY CONVICINGLY DEFEATED THE OPPOSITION , INCLUDING MILPARK , RECORDING FOUR WINS TO WIN THE LEAGUE.

THE BATSMEN WERE IN GOOD FORM AND MADE GOOD USE OF THE GOOD PARK PITCHES TO EASILY OUTSCORE THE OPPOSITION WITH THE LAST WIN COMING ON THE LAST SATURDAY IN SEPTEMBER . THE GAME AGAINST DONAGHADEE WENT UNPLAYED. THE LOSS AGAINST MILLPARK HAPPENED PLAYING WITH TEN MEN WITH TWO OR THREE STARRED PLAYERD MISSING.

STEVE KELLY HAD AN AVERAGE OF 97.33 SCORING 292 RUNS IN EIGHT INNINGS, FIVE NOT OUTS .WON THE BATTING CUP AND HAD THE HIGHEST SCORE ( 106 no ).

*************************************************************************************************************************

CHRIS ADRAIN PLAYED IN ALL GAMES ,SCORED  THE MOST RUNS ( 443 RUNS AT 49.22 ),

*******************************************************************

GOOD SUPPORT CAME FROM JEFF MEEKE WHO  SCORED 240 AT 24.00, STEVE FORSYTHE 173 RUNS, SCOTT DOUGHERTY 123 RUNS , IAN TAYLOR 108 RUNS AND LINCOLN REGISTE 113 RUNS.

THE WICKETS WERE SHARED AMONGST THE BOWLERS; STEVE FORSYTHE 15, SCOTT DOUGHERTY 14, CHRIS ADRAIN 13 , G.ARETH LUCAS 13 , DAVID FERGUSON 14, ADAM HARKNESS 13 , DAN HOOLE 9 AND GARETH BROWN 8.

GARETH LUCAS WON THE BOWLING CUP AS SCOTT DOUGHERTY , WHO HAD THE BEST ANALYSIS DID NOT PLAY ENOUGH GAMES TO BOWL THE 60 OVERS REQUIRED TO QUALIFY.

       *******************************

CHRIS ADRAIN WAS THE LEADING ALLROUNDER SCORING 443 RUNS AND TAKING 13 WICKETS. HE BOWLED MORE OVERS THAN ANYONE AS WELLAS OPENNING THE INNINGS.

THE SECOND ELEVEN RECORDED TWO VICTORIES OUT OF NINE. JAMES EAKIN LED FROM THE FRONT WINNING THE BOWLING CUP AND MANAGED TO FIELD A FULL TEAM ON MOST OCCASIONS.

HE WAS WELL SUPPORTED BY DAVID SUITOR AND DAVID FAULKNER WITH PETER AND MICHAEL McNAMEE MAKING WELCOME APPEARANCES.  IT WAS GOOD TO SEE PETER BACK PLAYING AND WE HOPE IT WILL BE THE START OF A NEW CAREER.

A NUMBER OF SCHOOLBOYS PLAYED THEIR PART AND JAMES KEPT THEM INTERESTED BY GIVING THEM A CHANCE TO BAT AND BOWL . THE TEAM MAY HAVE BEEN MORE COMPETETIVE WITH A MORE CONSISTANT BATTING ORDER.

J. DILWORTH WON THE BATTING CUP WITH STEVE CUDDY SCORING MOST RUNS (80) AND MAKING THE HIGHEST SCORE (64)

ALL IN ALL A GOOD SEASON WITH THE HARD WORK OF BILLY, CHRIS AND IAN PAYING OFF BUT IT WAS A CLOSE RUN THING.  THEY SHOULD BE WELL PLEASED WITH THEIR EFFORTS WHICH PRODUCED A SUCCESSFUL SEASON AS THERE WAS MINIMAL HELP FROM THE COUNCIL AND THE OUTFIELD IS THEIR RESPONSABILITY.

THE CYLINDERS HAVE ALL BEEN SHARPENNED AND THE CYLINDERS AND PULLEYS HAVE BEEN SCREWED TOGETHER AND ARE BETTER THAN NEW SO THE MOWER SHOULD BE IN TIP TOP CONDITION NEXT YEAR .

THE SCARIFIER HAS ALSO BEEN OVERHAULED WITH THE BEARINGS BEING REPLACED SO THINGS ARE LOOKING UP ON THE EQUIPMENT FRONT,

WELL DONE IAN, A GREAT EFFORT !!!!!!!!

                                                                                ******************************
