BASIL had a fine  cricket background before coming to live in and play for Dungannon. He had captained both QUB and NORTH to the then SENIOR LEAGUE TITLE and Dungannon was very pleased that he decided to play for the Town.

He played in 1966 when Dungannon were relegated from the SENIOR QUALIFYING LEAGUE and dropped back to the lowest section  D of the Junior Qualifying League. The next season Dungannon were promoted  with the help of Basil's batting and bowling . Cricketers have always been thin on the ground in Dungannon and at that time the Successful Dungannon team of the early 60's was ageing or moved on to other clubs. Unfortunately for Dungannon Basil moved back to Belfast to further his medical career and resumed playing for North where he Captained them to the SENIOR CUP.

Basil returned to Dungannon in 1972 and never left. This was a big boost to the club as we now had a reasonable number of good cricketers such as Philip Orr, Ian Brownlee , Bliiy Adrain , Danny Costelloe , Alan Gallagher to name a few. The club were reasonably successful reaching the SF of the Jn. Qual. Cup and winning the McGreedy Cup over the next few years and contested the Final of the Creamline Cup against the might of Waringstown and Downpatrick and put up a reasonable performance against these SENIOR  ONE sides. Basil's batting and bowling were invaluable.

In the 80s Basil retired and made comebacks on several occasions but still turned out until 1996 but he confined himself to batting because of a bad knee.

It can be seen that he was a very important member of the Dungannon team with his all round performances with bat and ball.

( 7 BATTING CUPS, 6 BOWLING CUPS, 6 MOST RUNS IN A SEASON, 5 MOST WICKETS, 11 BEST ALLROUNDER.)

Four McNamees played for Dungannon in a number of games with Basil playing with sons Peter, Andrew and Michael that well known BBC Radio presenter.

Not many have done that !!!!!

Basil bowled medium pace off cutters  and was always difficult to get away. He was an aggressive batsman who could destroy an attack and he loved driving in the air through the covers as well as being a great hooker and puller. On one occasion Basil and son, Michael, opened the innings against Millpark on a very lively wicket and put on one hundred in very quick time with a fine display of hooking , pulling and driving with the other Dungannon batsmen being pleased to watch.

Basil has also been involved with the NCU and was PRESIDENT 2001-02. He has also been involved with school cricket tours and has been chair of the school's committee.

In 2009 Basil was chosen as PRESIDENT ELECT of the IRISH CRICKET UNION and this season 2010 he has become PRESIDENT. We wish him good luck on his travels with the IRISH TEAM.
