Survival of NCU small clubs

Insert body text here...

READ GARY ALEXANDER'S ARTICLE ON THE STATE OF CRICKET ON LARNE C.C. WEBSITE .

**************************************************

LARNE HAVE CONTRACTED FROM 5 TO 2 TEAMS  HAVING LOST A LARGE NUMBER OF CAPABLE CRICKETERS. HE MAKE A POWERFUL ARGUEMENT FOR <= 40 OVER CRICKET.

DUNGANNON IS IN DANGER AND ONLY HALF A DOZEN PLAYERS ARE WORKING TO KEEP THE CLUB GOING. IF THEY LOSE INTEREST THE CLUB COULD JOIN THE EXTINCT LIST .

THE 1sts HAVE LOST 8 BOWLERS SINCE 2008 AND THE 2nds HAVE ALSO  LOST A NUMBER OF ADULTS.

THE SCHOOLBOYS LOSE INTEREST PROBABLY DUE TO THE TIME ELEMENT AND THE ATTRACTION OF GOLF

SINCE I STARTED PLAYING FOR DUNGANNON THE NUMBER OF CLUBS IN THE NCU ARE GOING INTO EXTINCTION AT AN ALARMING RATE.

THE NCU SEEM TO BE COMPLETELY UNAWARE OF AND  THEIR  DEMISE  AND THERE IS NO SIGN THAT THEY RECOGNISE THE DANGER TO GAME ITSELF.

LOOK AT THE NUMBER OF GAMES CONCEEDED THIS YEAR 2012

IRELAND HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL

AND THE DEVIL TAKE ALL THE SMALL CLUBS STRUGGLING TO EXIST.

*************************************************

THE BIG CLUBS SEEM TO TAKE THE ATTITUDE "I'M ALL RIGHT JACK AND THE SMALL CLUBS DO NOT MATTER. THE EMPHESIS HAS BEEN TO PROMOTE 50 OVER CRICKET TO  PROMOTE IRELAND'S AMBITIONS.

N.B. THE ENGLISH COUNTIES PLAY 40 OVER CRICKET AS DO A LOT OF ENGLISH LEAGUES SO WHY DO WE SADDLE OURSELVES WITH AN UNSOCIAL SYSTEM. CRICKET IS  SHOOTING ITSELF IN THE FOOT PLAYING 50 OVER CRICKET

THERE IS NO FLEXABILITY FOR CAPTAINS TO AGREE TO PLAY SHORTENED GAMES ( REDUCING OVERS TO  LESS THAN 50 SAY DOWN TO 20 ) IN POOR WEATHER CONDITIONS AND TEAMS CAN'T  AGREE TO PLAY ON PLASTIC PITCH TO PLAY A GAME WHICH COULD NOT BE PLAYED ON A GRASS PITCH.

START TIMES ARE INFLEXIBLE AS WELL.

NOW WE HAVE*** DUCKWORTH LEWIS ***INTRODUCED TO INCREASE THE COST OF PROVIDING A COMPUTER AND PRINTER.

UMPIRES SHOULD BE PAID WHEN STANDING IN THE TOP LEAGUES BUT THE FEE SHOULD BE REDUCED TO £10  + TRAVELLING EXPENCES WHEN UMPIRING DOWN THE LEAGUES TO HELP HARD UP CLUBS SUCH AS DUNGANNON IN S2 AND S3.

CLUBS ARE CONTRACTING AND GOING TO THE WALL BECAUSE THE NCU HAS NOT MOVED WITH THE TIMES .

IT IS REDICULOUS THAT RECREATIONAL CRICKETERS WITH NO REPRESENTATIVE AMBITIONS ARE ASKED TO SPEND 10 + HOURS AT TIMES TO PLAY A LEAGUE MATCH. (TWO AND A HALF ROUND OF GOLF)

eg LARNE at CLOGHER, CLOGHER at DONAGHADEE. I HAVE PLAYED IN GAMES ENDING AFTER 9PM FIELDING WITH 9 FIELDERS BECAUSE PLAYERS HAD TO GO TO WORK ON SATURDAY NIGHT.

***** THIS IS NOT THE way TO ENCOURAGE PLAYERS  AS THEY HAVE NO SOCIAL LIFE WHEN PLAYING *****

AND NOW THIS IS OFTEN   REPEATED ON A SUNDAY .

MANY PLAYERS ARE VERY RELUCTANT TO DO THIS AND WHO WOULD BLAME THEM.

REARRANGING IN MIDWEEK IS VERY DIFFICULT---- DIFFICULT TO HAVE SAME PLAYERS OVER TWO/THREE EVENINGS. START TIME IS TWO EARLY FOR MOST WORKING MEN. OVERS NEED TO BE REDUCED TO

MANY CRICKETERS PLAY HOCKEY AND RUGBY AND ARE NOT AVAILABLE UNTIL MID MAY AND ALONG WITH SCHOOLBOYS ARE NOT AVAILABLE IN SEPTEMBER BECAUSE OF RUGBY.

THE SEASON FOR THE LOWER LEAGUES SHOULD BE REDUCED say MID MAY to END OF AUGUST TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF CONCEEDED GAMES AS THE PLAYERS ARE NOT THERE.

WHAT IS THE NCU'S RESPONCE?

FINE CLUBS FOR CONCEEDING GAMES ******AFTER NUMEROUS PHONE CALLS TRYING TO FIELD A TEAM.****

FINE CLUBS FOR WITHDRAWING TEAMS FROM THE LEAGUE.

INCREASE FEES

******FINES SHOULD BE STOPPED IMMEDIATELY AS IT DOES NOT HELP  CLUBS IN DIFFICULTY**** THEY NEED ENCOURAGEMENT.

WHAT WILL ENCOURAGE MORE PLAYERS TO PLAY ?

************************************************************************************************************

1 REDUCE GAMES TO 5 HOURS PLAYING TIME  2 HOURS 30  MIN .OR 40 OVERS PER INNINGS IN GOOD WEATHER AND TO AN AGREED NUMBER OF OVERS IN POOR WEATHER.

2. iN THE EVENT OF RAIN THE 1st INNINGS FINISHES AFTER 2 HOURS 30 MINS AND THE TEAM BATTING SECOND RECEIVES THE SAME NUMBER OF OVERS.

3. 20 MIN. TEA INTERVAL (TEA AND A CAKE TO REDUCE COST)

4. GAME STARTS 1PM IN MAY AND JUNE TO FACILITATE SCHOOL GAMES ON A GROUND AND FINISHES 6.20 PM.

5. GAME STARTS 12 NOON IN JULY , AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER FINISHING AT 5.20PM

6. GAMES TO BE ONLY ARRANGED ON A FREE SATURDAY IF AVAILABLE.

7. UNFINISHED GAMES WILL BE VOID.

LEAGUE POSITIONS COULD BE ON A PERCENTAGE BASIS , AS IN THE OLD DAYS.

8.THE CAPTAINS SHOULD HAVE COMPLETE  FLEXIBILITY SO THAT THE GAME CAN BE PLAYED

THIS WILL GIVE PLAYERS A DAY AT HOME RATHER THAN SPEND TWO DAYS AWAY PLAYING CRICKET

*****************************************************************************************************

THE ABOVE SUGGESTIONS WOULD ALLOW PLAYERS AND UMPIRES TO RETURN HOME AT A REASONABLE HOUR AND ALLOW THEM TO TAKE OUT THEIR WIVES AND GIRL FRIENDS FOR THE EVENING.  ****ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY*****

PLAYERS WOULD BE PROBABLY BE MORE WILLING TO PLAY  AND ALSO ENCOURAGE SOME TO BECOME UMPIRES.

NB ******* UMPIRES ARE IN SHORT SUPPLY*****  ONE REASON IS THE 50 OVER GAME IS FAR TOO LONG

THIS SHOULD  MAKE ADULTS AND SCHOOLBOYS BE MORE WILLING TO GIVE UP AN AFTERNOON TO CRICKET INSTEAD OF A GAME TAKING A WHOLE DAY.

THIS COULD BE A GOOD WAY OF ENCOURAGING SCHOOLBOYS TO KEEP PLAYING.

35 OVERS FOR JUNIOR LEAGUE 5 HAS RECEIVED WARM WELCOME BY OUR CLUB.

THE ALTERNATIVE TO PLAY GOLF WILL STILL BE VERY TEMPTING TO MANY.

EXTINCT CLUBS SINCE 1966 :   POSC, SIRROCO,LAMBEG, CROSSBOWS,CROSSGAR,McQUISTON, OLD BLEACH, ICL, SHORTS, CIVIL SERVICE or NORTH, COLLEGIANS or COOKE, PSNI, ICI, BALLYNAHINCH, CLIFTON, PSNI, MILFORD, NEWRY,BLUE CIRCLE, YMCA, LOOPVALE to name a few.

MID WEEK CRICKET HAS DIED IN MID ULSTER WITH THE DEMISE OF WESLIE FERRIS WHOSE WORK TO ENCOURAGE THE GAME HAS GONE UNRECOGNISED.

THE TYRONE AND FERMANAGH LEAGUE HAS GONE AFTER  THE LATE BOB KERR STOPPED DRIVING THINGS.

ALL IN ALL NOT AN ENCOURAGING PICTURE BUT IRELAND APPEAR TO BE GOING WELL BUT IS ULSTER CRICKET HEALTHY??

THE WITHDRAWAL OF CLOGHER IS A FURTHER BLOW TO ULSTER CRICKET LEAVING 7 TEAMS IN SENIOR 2 (12 GAMES). DUNGANNON WILL NOW PLAY SIX GAMES IN DUNGANNON PARK, COST £530 + LOOKING AFTER A SQUARE WITH ELEVEN PITCHES (ONLY THREE NEEDED)
